Meet Professor Mike Riddell. Mike is the co-founder of the Physical Activity and Diabetes Unit at York University in Toronto and he recently visited Perth to share his research on exercise and type 1 diabetes at last month's Children’s Diabetes Centre Community Forum.
Not only is Mike an academic expert but he also lives with diabetes and brought his personal experience of his approach to tackling some of the challenges this poses.
His global interests focus on the effects of exercise and stress on diabetes and metabolism and he is the founder of the York University Diabetes Sports Camp.
Mike even has a lab named after him — The Riddell lab focuses on exercise physiology and metabolism in diabetes. Using a variety of research techniques, Mike’s team explores the benefits of regular physical activity in diabetes and how to make exercise safer by improving blood glucose control.
