Diabetes WA and Perth Children’s Hospital’s recent camp proved to be a “rock-star” hit for kids living with type 1 diabetes.
Held during the April school holidays, the three-day rockstar-themed camp was designed to give children aged 11 and 12 the opportunity to try new things — archery, abseiling, mountain biking, craft and performing arts — in a safe environment.
It was also a great opportunity to have fun with other kids living with type 1 diabetes.
“Diabetes should not stop children living with diabetes from enjoying experiences that children not living with diabetes take for granted,” Diabetes WA Health Services Operations Manager Sophie McGough said.
To increase their skills, confidence and independence in managing their diabetes, the children also attended education sessions to increase their understanding of type 1 diabetes.
They were also lucky enough to meet motorsport driver Jake Burton, who shared his experiences of living with type 1 diabetes.
The camp was held at Point Walter Recreation and Conference Centre and was partly funded by Lotterywest.
